Kaiser Permanente Files WARN Notices for 216 California Layoffs Ahead of Oct. 14 Strike

The cuts raise stakes in a contract standoff with unions planning a five-day strike starting Oct. 14.

Overview

  • An Oct. 6 filing to California’s Employment Development Department says 216 employees were notified beginning Sept. 17, with separations expected after the 60-day notice period across roughly 15 hospitals and clinics.
  • State records show 164 positions are in Bay Area locations including Oakland, Redwood City, San Leandro, Pleasanton and Walnut Creek, with 52 in Corona, Downey, Los Angeles, Pasadena and San Diego.
  • Roles slated for elimination include marketing, operations, nutrition and information technology positions, following earlier 2025 reductions that cut 118 IT and business operations jobs.
  • Kaiser describes the move as a rebalancing of resources and points to a wage proposal of 21.5% over four years, while Alliance unions have been seeking about 25%.
  • More than 31,000 UNAC/UHCP nurses and health professionals have issued 10-day notices for an Oct. 14–19 walkout and paused participation in the Labor Management Partnership, and it remains unclear whether the cuts involve union-represented roles.
