Overview
- Since June 21 the Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded 2,177 tremors of intensity 1 or higher beneath the Tokara Islands.
- On July 18 two undersea quakes of magnitude 3.1–3.3 and intensity 3 struck near Akusekijima at depths around 20 kilometers.
- As of July 19, 42 residents from Akusekijima and 15 from Kodakarajima remain evacuated on the mainland, although some have returned voluntarily.
- Inclement weather on July 18 forced Toshima Village to postpone its planned voluntary return trips for evacuees.
- Governor Koichi Shioda’s July 19 inspection of Akusekijima and Kodakarajima included discussions on economic losses, prompting his pledge to distribute relief funds by early August.
