Kagome Simplifies Ketchup Packaging to Save Scarce Printing Ink

The change responds to a shortage of naphtha-based inks tied to tensions in the Middle East.

Overview

  • Kagome, which announced the move Thursday, will roll out new packaging for three Tomato Ketchup sizes starting in late May.
  • The refresh cuts the number of tomato illustrations and makes most of the outer pouch clear for the 500g, 300g, and 180g SKUs.
  • The company cites unstable procurement of petroleum-derived inks, including white ink used for package backgrounds, as suppliers struggle because of Middle East developments.
  • Kagome says the container and recipe do not change and the price stays the same, and it expects to cut ink use by about half.
  • Other food makers are taking similar steps, with Calbee switching 14 snack packages to black-and-white printing and Nisshin Seifun Welna removing printed boil-time bands on spaghetti to keep products flowing.
