Overview
- K-Electric said on Oct. 9–10 that a nationwide shortage of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) from delayed and suspended cargoes could force it to use load management as an extreme, last-resort measure during evening and night peaks.
- The utility stressed daytime supply is expected to stay largely stable and that any cuts would be limited to evening and night hours to protect grid stability.
- Residents and local reports in Karachi described one- to three-hour rotational outages starting on Friday, including in neighborhoods that were previously exempt from load-shedding.
- K-Electric said it is coordinating with Pakistan LNG Limited and government authorities to restore RLNG deliveries, but high international spot prices and scarce tanker availability make rapid replacement cargoes difficult to secure.
- The shortage traces to international disruptions, including reduced Qatari deliveries after attacks and a force majeure declaration, and officials say limited winter cargoes and costs could deepen risks to supply and commerce in Karachi.
