Overview
- Verlander was scratched from his scheduled Sunday start after the left hamstring strain he suffered during a bullpen session was confirmed by manager A.J. Hinch on Friday, who said the right-hander will be sidelined for “weeks.”
- Right-hander Keider Montero has been named to replace Verlander in the rotation for the upcoming start at Comerica Park.
- The hamstring is a new injury separate from the left-hip inflammation that sent Verlander to the 60-day injured list in May and interrupted a rehab that included Triple-A outings in Toledo.
- Verlander, 43 and a future Hall of Famer, has made only one appearance this season and said he will try to give the Tigers everything this year while acknowledging the setback has made him reconsider his future.
- The setback forces Detroit to rework short-term roster and rotation plans and could influence the club’s trade and innings-management decisions as the team evaluates pitching availability late this summer.
