Thomas made 11 birdies, the most ever in a single round at TPC Sawgrass, and improved 16 strokes from his opening round 78, matching the tournament record for round-to-round improvement.
A bogey on the 18th hole, following a water hazard penalty, prevented Thomas from setting a new course record outright.
Despite his historic performance, Thomas sits at 4-under for the tournament, seven shots behind co-leaders Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia heading into the weekend.
Thomas, a two-time major champion, has not won on the PGA Tour since his 2022 PGA Championship victory and will need strong weekend play to contend for his second Players Championship title.
