• Justice Surya Kant, currently chair of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, has been nominated by President Droupadi Murmu as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
• The nomination, formalized through a gazette notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice, will take effect on May 14, 2025.
• Justice B.R. Gavai, the current Executive Chairman of NALSA, will assume office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on the same date.
• By convention, the role of NALSA's Executive Chairman is held by the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, a position Justice Surya Kant occupies.
• Established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, NALSA aims to provide free legal aid and promote access to justice for marginalized and economically weaker communities across India.
