Justice Department Subpoenas Brennan, Strzok and Page in Probe of 2017 Russia Intelligence Assessment

Prosecutors are collecting 2016–2017 communications on the intelligence assessment under South Florida U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones.

Overview

  • Former CIA Director John Brennan and ex-FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were served federal grand jury subpoenas on Friday, according to multiple outlets citing sources.
  • The subpoenas seek emails, texts and documents from July 2016 through February 2017 related to drafting the Intelligence Community’s January 2017 assessment on Russian interference.
  • Prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida are supervising the inquiry, and sources say as many as 30 subpoenas are expected in the coming days.
  • Quiñones’ office is also reviewing materials from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team, while the Justice Department has declined to comment and any potential charges remain unclear.
  • The investigation follows referrals and declassifications by political officials, even as prior reviews by Mueller, the DOJ inspector general and John Durham did not find criminal wrongdoing in the assessment’s preparation.
