Overview

  • On July 17 the DOJ asked Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Riverside county sheriffs for full lists of noncitizen inmates, citing criminal exception provisions to California’s sanctuary law
  • Sheriff Robert Luna said LA County will comply only with federal judicial warrants, rejecting routine ICE detainer requests under SB 54
  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta and multiple county sheriffs signaled they will resist or legally challenge the data demands to uphold state limits on local immigration enforcement
  • Between May and June the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department transferred 20 jail inmates to ICE under federal warrants, marking the first cooperation since early 2020
  • Immigrant advocates and state leaders have prepared lawsuits and legislative measures to defend sanctuary protections against the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement
