Justice Department Begins Releasing Epstein Files, Misses Full Deadline

Officials say more records will follow after redactions to protect victims and ongoing investigations.

Overview

  • Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the DOJ posted several hundred thousand records on Friday and will release additional batches over the next couple of weeks.
  • The law signed Nov. 19 requires publication of unclassified Epstein and Maxwell materials, allows redactions for victim privacy, child sexual‑abuse content, classified information and active probes, and forbids withholding to avoid embarrassment.
  • House Oversight Democrats accused the department of violating the statute by not completing the release and said they are examining legal options, with a separate 15‑day deadline requiring DOJ to detail what was released and withheld.
  • Heavy traffic overwhelmed the DOJ website shortly after the files went live, and an agency notice warned that despite reviews, some pages might inadvertently contain sensitive personal information.
  • In the run‑up to the deadline, House Democrats published additional estate photos and texts featuring Epstein with public figures, and judges in New York and Florida approved limited releases of grand jury materials.
