  • Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will succeed Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retires on May 13, 2025.
  • President Droupadi Murmu approved the appointment following the recommendation by outgoing CJI Khanna on April 16, 2025.
  • Justice Gavai will serve as Chief Justice of India until his retirement on November 23, 2025, upon reaching the age of 65.
  • He will be the second Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste community, following Justice KG Balakrishnan (2007–2010).
  • Justice Gavai has contributed to landmark rulings, including on Article 370 abrogation, demonetisation, and electoral bond transparency.
