Jury Rules Neglect Contributed to Death of Five-Year-Old Lila Marsland

The decision follows a jury’s ruling that Tameside Hospital misdiagnosed her severe meningitis as tonsillitis, prompting an unreserved apology from the NHS trust.

Overview

  • A Stockport jury found that Lila’s December 2023 death from pneumococcal meningitis streptococcal pneumonia was contributed to by neglect after she was sent home with a misdiagnosis.
  • Jurors determined that administering broad-spectrum antibiotics within an hour of triage could have prevented her death.
  • Despite classic meningitis symptoms—neck stiffness, high heart rate, headache, vomiting and lethargy—Lila was diagnosed with tonsillitis and discharged after a nine-hour A&E stay.
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust accepted the coroner’s findings, issued an unreserved apology and pledged to learn from the case.
  • Lila’s family has launched Lila’s Light, a charity providing comfort bags to hospitals across the North West for bereaved siblings.
