Jury Hears Voicemails in McCann Stalking Trial as Defendant Pleads for DNA Test

Prosecutors say recordings presented to jurors illustrate a sustained pattern of contact that caused serious distress.

Overview

  • At Leicester Crown Court, recordings were played of Julia Wandelt, 24, telling Kate McCann she believed she was Madeleine and asking, "What if I’m her?"
  • Wandelt was heard urging the couple not to think their daughter was dead and repeatedly begging for a DNA test, saying she would pay for it and leave them alone if proven wrong.
  • Jurors heard Gerry McCann answer a call once before a follow-up voicemail in which Wandelt said, "I won’t give up" and vowed to "prove my point with or without your help."
  • Prosecutors allege repeated emails, calls, voicemails, social media messages and visits from June 2022 to February 2025, including more than 60 contacts in a single day and messages to the McCanns’ twins.
  • The case includes Kate McCann’s account of a frightening doorstep confrontation and the arrests of Wandelt at Bristol Airport and co-defendant Karen Spragg, 61, who left the dock in tears as audio was played; both deny one count of stalking.
