Jury Finds Brighton Woman Unlawfully Killed Husband With Samurai Sword

Deemed unfit to plead after psychiatric assessment, Joanna Rowland-Stuart was detained indefinitely under Section 41 of the Mental Health Act.

Overview

  • The verdict was delivered on July 24 at Lewes Crown Court after a trial of facts determined she committed the act of killing her husband.
  • Prosecutors told jurors she stabbed and sliced her 70-year-old husband more than 50 times with a samurai sword in their Brighton flat last May.
  • Although Rowland-Stuart claimed she acted in self-defence, the Crown argued that the severity and number of wounds ruled out any reasonable use of force.
  • Under Section 41 of the Mental Health Act 1983, she will remain in secure hospital detention indefinitely rather than face a standard criminal trial.
  • Andrew Rowland-Stuart was found dead in their Lavender Street flat on May 27, 2024, with a post mortem confirming fatal stab wounds.
