Jury Convicts Worcester Man of Attempted Murder in Split Verdict Over 2017 Bridge Attack

Sentencing is set for Oct. 3 following a split verdict acquitting him on rape charges.

Overview

  • Jurors found Joshua Hubert guilty of two counts of attempted murder—by strangulation and by drowning—along with strangulation or suffocation and kidnapping a child under 16.
  • He was acquitted on two aggravated child rape charges after the weekslong trial in Worcester Superior Court.
  • Prosecutors said Hubert, a family acquaintance, took the 7-year-old from her grandparents’ Worcester home after a cookout before the pre-dawn assault.
  • The child survived being thrown from the I-290 bridge into Lake Quinsigamond, swam to shore, sought help in Shrewsbury, and later testified; she is now 15.
  • Trial evidence included forensic testimony that sperm cells found on the girl’s underwear matched her father and not Hubert, and sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 3.
