Jury Convicts San Francisco Man in 2019 Attacks Targeting Asian American Victims

Prosecutors described a January spree that concentrated on Asian residents, culminating in the beating of 88-year-old Yik Oi Huang at a neighborhood park.

Overview

  • The verdict followed weeks of testimony in which Assistant District Attorney Nathan Quigley walked jurors through each incident.
  • Prosecutors said the first assault occurred Jan. 3, 2019, when Dhung My Chung was struck from behind, his keys taken, and his car driven away.
  • The next day, they said, Guifeng Yu was robbed, and on Jan. 8, 88-year-old Yik Oi Huang was beaten while practicing qigong before sunrise in Visitacion Valley.
  • Additional incidents included a car stolen as a man dropped his wife at a Sunset District bus stop and two minors robbed of their phones at gunpoint, while a third non-Asian teen was released after saying she needed her phone for school.
  • Huang later died on Jan. 3, 2020 after long-term care, and the community renamed the Leland Avenue park in her honor with a dedication in June 2024.
