Jurors Hear Voicemails as Woman Accused of Stalking McCanns Pleads for DNA Test

Prosecutors presented recordings in Leicester showing Julia Wandelt asserting she is Madeleine during what they allege was a years-long campaign.

Overview

  • The jury heard messages in which Wandelt told Kate McCann “you are mummy” and urged the family to agree to a DNA test.
  • Prosecutors said contact peaked at extreme levels, including more than 60 calls and messages in a single day and five texts sent within seven seconds.
  • In voicemails played in court, Wandelt said “What if I’m her?” and insisted Madeleine was not dead, while Gerry McCann once answered a call and was told he had the wrong number.
  • Wandelt’s messages included an unverified claim of a 69.23% DNA ‘match’ from Portuguese case files, with offers to pay for an official test.
  • Co-defendant Karen Spragg, accused of supporting the campaign, became upset and left the dock during the playback; both women deny stalking charges and were arrested at Bristol Airport in February 2025.
