Junts Raises Stakes in Catalan Debate, Tying Sánchez’s Survival to Illa

A Thursday vote on a Junts push for full amnesty sharpens leverage over the PSC as well as the PSOE.

Overview

  • The Catalan Parliament’s second day of the policy debate featured Junts leader Albert Batet telling President Salvador Illa that the outcome could reshape Junts’s relationship with Pedro Sánchez.
  • Junts has scheduled a Thursday vote on a resolution urging full application of the amnesty law and denouncing what it calls lawfare, including alleged disobedience by Supreme Court judges.
  • Illa defended his record by citing housing program figures of 670 available sites, 22,000 units in progress, 7,000 under construction, and 1,800 acquired, and he rejected a comparison to Donald Trump.
  • Batet said Junts will review its deal with the national government this autumn and warned that if negotiations end the party will seek another route, putting Sánchez’s legislative numbers at risk.
  • The debate also exposed disputes over budgets, Rodalies commuter rail performance, and the role of the Comuns, while Puigdemont’s continued legal risk entering Spain kept the amnesty issue prominent.
