Junta Electoral Lets Voters Use MiDNI Mobile ID at Polling Stations

The electoral authority lifted a prior ban after the Interior Ministry guaranteed every polling station would have camera-equipped devices running the official MiDNI QR verifier.

Overview

  • La Junta Electoral Central has rescinded its suspension and will allow voters to prove identity with the MiDNI app when casting ballots.
  • The Interior Ministry told the JEC that each polling station will have a device with a camera and browser that runs the official MiDNI QR verifier to check the app’s temporary QR codes.
  • The JEC requires the verifier webpage to be opened in front of the electoral table at the moment a voter presents the app so staff can confirm the ID on site.
  • MiDNI has been legally valid as a digital identity since April 2 and public and private bodies are obliged to accept it, but the JEC had previously barred its use in elections over verification concerns.
  • The change lets voters use their phones instead of a physical ID and places new practical demands on polling stations, including device management, staff training, and potential effects on check-in speed.
