Overview

• Juneteenth celebrations began over the weekend in Phoenix and surrounding cities with family-friendly festivals, cultural performances and public art workshops across Tempe, Goodyear, Chandler and Phoenix venues.
• In Houston, the Juneteenth Culture Fest launched at Miller Outdoor Theatre on June 13 and continues through Discovery Green featuring live gospel-to-funk concerts, more than 100 local vendors and educational programs.
• Galveston’s lineup includes the Menard Park festival, a community parade to Wright Cuney Park and a fireworks finale at the Freedom, Fireworks & Family event on June 19.
• Chicago’s observances span scholarship-awarding panel breakfasts at Malcolm X College, a community barbecue at the DuSable Black History Museum and an R&B music fest headlined at Wintrust Arena.
• Across cities, organizers are underscoring the holiday’s themes of emancipation, community unity and Black cultural heritage as Americans reflect on the delayed enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.
