June Givanni to be Honored with Bafta's Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award
The award recognizes Givanni's significant contributions to African and African diaspora cinema through her work as a film curator and the founder of the June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive.
- June Givanni, a pioneering film curator and writer of African and African diaspora cinema, will receive the outstanding British contribution to cinema prize during the 2024 Bafta film awards.
- As the founder of the June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive (JGPACA), she has dedicated her career to preserving the history of Pan-African and Black British cinema and culture.
- The JGPACA, a volunteer-run archive based in London, comprises more than 10,000 rare and unique artefacts documenting the development of film-making across Africa and the African diaspora.
- Givanni began her career as the coordinator of Third Eye, London’s first Festival of Third World Cinema, and has worked as a film curator on five continents.
- Previous recipients of the award include actors Andy Serkis and Sir John Hurt, as well as the Harry Potter films and film directors Sir Ridley Scott alongside his brother Tony Scott.
