Julio Iglesias Asks Spanish Prosecutors to Dismiss Complaint, Arguing Lack of Jurisdiction

Prosecutors have opened a secret preliminary inquiry to decide if the case can proceed in Spain.

Overview

  • In a 15-page brief, lawyer José Antonio Choclán asks to be admitted to the file and urges immediate archiving, arguing Spanish courts lack extraterritorial competence under Article 23 of the Judiciary Law.
  • The defense says the alleged acts occurred in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, the accusers are not Spanish, and media coverage has caused “grave reputational harm,” so Iglesias must access the complaint and any witness examinations.
  • The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened secret pre-procedural diligences and plans to take statements from the two accusers as protected witnesses before deciding next steps.
  • The complaint, filed on January 5 with support from Women’s Link Worldwide, alleges sexual assaults, forced gynecological checks, injuries, and labor and trafficking offenses in 2021 at Iglesias’s Caribbean residences.
  • Iglesias has publicly denied the accusations, stating he has never abused, coerced, or disrespected any woman.
