Overview

  • U.S. agents delivered Chávez Jr. at the Dennis DeConcini crossing in Nogales on Aug. 18, and Mexican federal agents moved him to the Cefereso 11 maximum-security prison in Hermosillo.
  • He is held under a March 2023 arrest warrant that accuses him of organized crime and trafficking of weapons, ammunition and explosives, according to the FGR.
  • ICE arrested him in Studio City, California, in early July and DHS described him as affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel before initiating expedited removal.
  • The FGR says multiple amparos filed by his defense failed to block his detention upon return, and President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the deportation.
  • FGR chief Alejandro Gertz Manero criticized prior U.S. tolerance of his presence despite the warrant, while Julio César Chávez Sr. publicly denies the allegations against his son.
