Overview

  • Chávez Jr. was handed over at the Nogales border crossing on Aug. 18 and transferred to a federal prison in Hermosillo, Sonora, according to Mexico’s National Detention Registry.
  • ICE arrested him in Los AngelesStudio City area on July 2–3 and held him 46 days for expedited removal after a visa overstay and alleged fraudulent statements on a residency application.
  • DHS publicly described Chávez as a Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active Mexican warrant for trafficking guns, ammunition and explosives, assertions his lawyer and family deny.
  • U.S. officials say he entered with a B2 tourist visa in August 2023 that expired in February 2024 and sought permanent residency in April 2024 based on a marriage DHS linked to the cartel through prior associations.
  • His arrest came four days after a June 28 bout with Jake Paul, as U.S. authorities have emphasized removals of individuals deemed public‑safety threats and after Washington designated the Sinaloa Cartel a foreign terrorist organization this year.
