Overview

• Powell made history in 1989 as the first Black Miss Canada and represented the country at Miss Universe that year.
• She rose to prominence in the 1990s as a VJ on MusiquePlus and host of MuchMusic’s live dance show Electric Circus.
• Transitioning to journalism, Powell served as a business reporter on CablePulse 24 (now CP24) and founded Powell International Entertainment Inc.
• As an author and speaker, she co-wrote the 2023 book The AI Dilemma and became a leading voice on user privacy and technology ethics.
• Her body was found at her New York home on June 3 and co-author Art Kleiner confirmed acute bacterial meningitis as the cause of death.
