At the time, Greer was hesitant to take on a long-term TV role as a mother, feeling it could limit her career and personal freedom.
The part of Claire Dunphy ultimately went to Julie Bowen, who won two Emmy Awards for her performance over the show’s 11-season run.
Greer explained that she valued her ability to travel and work on diverse film projects, which she felt a TV commitment might restrict.
Although she passed on the audition, Greer made a guest appearance in the first season of 'Modern Family' as Phil Dunphy’s ex-girlfriend.
