Judge Sends Case in Danville Councilman Fire Attack to Grand Jury

Police testified the suspect said he targeted Lee Vogler over an alleged affair, buying gasoline with intent to kill.

Overview

  • At a preliminary hearing on Sept. 30, Judge Greg Haymore found probable cause and certified charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding.
  • Danville police said Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes told investigators he set Vogler on fire because of an alleged affair and that he purchased gasoline to carry out a killing.
  • Coworker Steven Seiple testified he saw Buck-Hayes chase Vogler with a bucket, pour gasoline, and that Vogler fled burning and yelled for help.
  • Blair Vogler told the court her husband suffered second- and third-degree burns over about 60% of his body, underwent multiple surgeries, and sustained lung damage and other complications.
  • A grand jury will hear the case on Oct. 27; Buck-Hayes remains jailed without bail, the defense requested a mental evaluation, and authorities have said the attack stemmed from a personal matter rather than politics.
