Judge Questions UCM Officials in Probe of Software Linked to Begoña Gómez

The inquiry tests whether university procedures were broken in the handling of the chair’s software.

Overview

  • Investigating magistrate Juan Carlos Peinado took testimony on November 28 from five Universidad Complutense de Madrid officials and staff about the software tied to a UCM chair.
  • Two OTRI employees told the judge they were informed in September 2022 that Begoña Gómez, identified to them as the prime minister’s wife, would seek intellectual property guidance and that she arrived with Moncloa adviser Cristina Álvarez.
  • The court is examining an alleged misappropriation after Gómez registered the program’s brand and logo while the university never patented the software as its own.
  • Peinado is also probing possible unauthorized practice over the signing of the technical specifications for a €60,000 Deloitte contract to develop part of the platform.
  • UCM’s comptroller reiterated a report labeling a €24,200 Making Science engagement null and irregular, while the defense cites UCM emails directing Gómez to sign and argues she contributed the platform’s name.
