Judge Proposes Jury Trial in Begoña Gómez Embezzlement Case, Sets Saturday Hearing

The court grants garage entry for Gómez after Moncloa security warned of a hostile climate around her appearance.

Overview

  • Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado has called a 6:00 p.m. Saturday hearing to specify the allegations against Begoña Gómez, her adviser Cristina Álvarez, and Madrid’s government delegate Francisco Martín.
  • Madrid’s court dean authorized Gómez to enter the Plaza de Castilla courthouse via the garage for security reasons following a request from the Presidency’s Security Department that cited an “hostile” environment and “evident social rejection.”
  • Media access inside the building will be restricted to the sixth-floor corridor for the agencies Colpisa, Efe, Servimedia, and Europa Press, while defense counsel must use the general professional entrance.
  • Outside the courthouse, the group coordinating the popular accusations has called a protest under the slogan “No al corrupto,” as inside the parties may seek further investigative steps and the prosecution or defenses may press for dismissal.
  • Several appeals against Peinado’s decisions remain pending before the Madrid Provincial Court, and if the case reaches trial it would be decided by nine jurors drawn by lot from the public electoral-census list for Madrid.
