Overview
- U.S. Magistrate Judge Valerie Torres denied bail for Ryan Bennett Segura, 27, keeping him in federal custody following a detention hearing Tuesday after his Aug. 12 arrest and device seizures.
- Prosecutors told the court Segura took non-sexual photos of his students, used them for arousal, and shared them with an out-of-state man who holds a public-facing job.
- They also alleged Segura directed a Denver suspect to perform specific sexual acts on a child and engaged in other explicit online relationships, including one involving a 16-year-old.
- According to an FBI probable cause statement, the case grew from a Denver-area arrest and phone forensics that identified communications with Segura, who allegedly admitted sharing child sexual abuse material and said he viewed it until about March 2025.
- Segura is charged with distributing images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, which carries a five-year mandatory minimum and up to 20 years; his lawyer sought GPS-monitored release, and St. Augustine High School has placed him on leave and offered counseling.
