Judge Orders Detention for Woman Accused of Glass-Bottle Attacks on CTA Riders

Federal transit officials are threatening to pull funding unless CTA steps up safety.

Overview

  • Jada Beatty, 26, was ordered held in jail at her first court appearance Wednesday and is due back in court Friday, according to records.
  • Police say two women, ages 19 and 31, were struck in the head with a glass bottle on a Red Line train near Lake Street around 10 a.m. Tuesday.
  • A short time later, a 66-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife were attacked at the State Street Macy’s; officers arrested Beatty after victims identified her near 160 N. Wabash.
  • Prosecutors charged her with four counts of aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated battery to a transit passenger, and two counts involving victims over 60.
  • Authorities note Beatty’s prior Nov. 6 arrest involving a transit rider, as the FTA—led by Marc Molinaro—warns it could withhold tens of millions from CTA unless safety improves following high-profile incidents including the Blue Line arson case.
