Judge Frees 38 From Alleged La Luz del Mundo Camp After Ruling Arrest Illegal

The federal government moved to scrutinize the church’s legal status under the religious associations law.

Overview

  • A federal judge in Morelia, Yaksi Kinari Alquicira Vázquez, ordered the release after finding warrantless entry and an 11–12 hour delay in presenting the detainees to the FGR.
  • The decision voided immediate charges of criminal association and firearms possession, and the men were freed following a multi‑hour hearing.
  • State police had detained the group at a training site in Vista Hermosa, seizing a 9 mm pistol, 19 replica rifles and pistols, knives, tactical gear, radios and a simulated explosive; one detainee is a U.S. citizen.
  • Authorities and press accounts identify the group as Jahzer, an internal guard linked to La Luz del Mundo that provides protection for leaders and events.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum asked Segob to review the church’s registration under the Law of Religious Associations, a process that can lead to fines, suspension of rights or cancellation, while the FGR keeps its probe open.
