Overview

  • A Manhattan judge extended a temporary restraining order on July 15, blocking the NYPD’s 24-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation or firing of 30 probationary officers.
  • The officers were identified as unqualified based on prior arrests, drug use, criminal convictions and other disqualifying factors but entered the force after Inspector Terrell Anderson improperly cleared their hires.
  • The PBA contends that summary terminations would inflict severe financial hardship on the officers and strip them of due process and appeal rights despite completing six-month academy training.
  • Both the department and the union now have 60 days to prepare legal briefs as the court evaluates the officers’ disqualification notices and NYPD’s hiring oversight.
  • Union representatives highlighted that 26 of the affected officers are Black or Hispanic, amplifying concerns over potential racial bias in the vetting and firing procedures.
