Judge Denies Bond for Ohio Mother Accused of Torturing Son After Amber Alert Rescue

Prosecutors in two states are building the case using videos police say show the child being tortured.

Overview

  • Ross Township police arrested Tiarika Baymon, 32, after tracking her car from an Amber Alert issued in Brunswick/Medina County, Ohio.
  • Officers found Baymon asleep in a parked vehicle with a loaded gun on her lap and the 7-year-old lying on folded-down rear seats; they forcibly removed her as the gun fell to the ground.
  • The child suffered multiple traumatic injuries with possible broken bones, was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, and was later transferred to UPMC Mercy’s burn unit; police say he is expected to survive.
  • An Allegheny County judge denied bond at a Monday hearing; Baymon faces a second-degree felony count of endangering the welfare of children plus misdemeanors including carrying a firearm without a license, reckless endangerment, obstruction, resisting arrest, and false identification.
  • Brunswick police say a prior welfare check found no legal cause to detain Baymon, then an FBI tip about an Instagram video showing the boy bound and injured triggered the alert; Ohio authorities filed a child endangerment charge and expect a Medina County grand jury indictment.
