Judge Denies Bond After Multi-County Michigan Chase Ends in Tree Crash

• Deputies attempted to stop a black Nissan Infiniti just after midnight on Nov. 21 on Lapeer Road near Wadhams for a missing license plate.
• The driver, identified as 39-year-old Virginia Smith of Port Huron, fled northbound while speeding and repeatedly crossing into oncoming traffic, according to deputies.
• The pursuit ran through Clyde and Grant townships into southern Sanilac County and ended in Worth Township when the car hit a tree behind Zimmer Auto Sales.
• Smith was medically cleared at McLaren Port Huron and lodged at the St. Clair County Detention and Intervention Center, and deputies reported the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.
• She was arraigned on second-degree fleeing, two resisting and obstructing counts, second-offense operating while intoxicated, reckless driving, and open container, and a judge denied bond.
