Judge Blocks GE From Exiting Vineyard Wind Contracts

The ruling preserves work on the nearly finished wind farm by enforcing the contract’s dispute process.

Overview

  • Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Peter Krupp granted a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction Friday, blocking GE Renewables from terminating its Vineyard Wind contracts.
  • An independent engineer found GE liable for about $545 million, a determination GE has not formally challenged and that Vineyard Wind cites to justify withholding payments.
  • GE Vernova says Vineyard Wind owes about $300 million and says it has finished installing all 62 turbines and remains engaged in supporting safe operations.
  • Judge Krupp wrote that losing the principal contractor at this stage would set the project back immeasurably and called the idea of replacing GE’s proprietary design knowledge fanciful.
  • The dispute traces to a July 2024 failure in which a turbine blade detached and fell into the ocean, scattering fiberglass on Nantucket beaches during peak tourist season.
