Judge Bars Pornography Evidence in Trial of Arizona Father Over Toddler’s Hot-Car Death

The court will allow testimony about prior incidents of children left in cars.

Overview

  • Christopher Scholtes, 38, is charged with first-degree murder and intentional child abuse in the July 9, 2024 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Parker, in Marana, Ariz.
  • Judge Kimberly Ortiz ruled that prosecutors may not tell jurors about an alleged two-minute pornography search on a PlayStation before the child was discovered.
  • Prosecutors can present texts and witness accounts alleging previous occasions when Scholtes left children unattended in vehicles.
  • The medical examiner recorded an interior temperature of about 109°F, and records say Scholtes told police he left the AC running, went inside, forgot his daughter, and knew the engine shuts off after 30 minutes.
  • Scholtes has pleaded not guilty after rejecting a plea offer earlier this year, and his trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 27 in Pima County Superior Court.
