Judge Bars LAPD From Using Force on Journalists Covering Immigration Protests

Overview

  • The restraining order forbids the department from deploying rubber bullets, tear gas, flash-bang grenades and other less-lethal munitions against journalists who pose no imminent threat.
  • It prohibits officers from citing, detaining or arresting reporters in closed areas for failure to disperse, curfew violations or obstruction while gathering news.
  • The order remains in effect for at least 14 days and will be evaluated at a July 24 hearing on a potential preliminary injunction.
  • Judge Hernán D. Vera cited at least 35 incidents between June 6 and 19 where journalists were struck or pushed by police during demonstrations following ICE raids.
  • The LAPD’s Professional Standards Bureau is probing 59 use-of-force complaints tied to the protests that spurred the lawsuit.
