JST Reconstructs Two Impacts in San Juan Bell 412 Crash

Investigators are trying to recover data from a badly damaged flight recorder to explain a fatal flight path that remains undetermined.

Overview

  • The crash of Bell 412 LV‑KGR killed seven people and occurred on July 29 during a personnel transfer linked to the national firefighting plan.
  • Crash investigators found the helicopter struck a roughly 2.5‑metre rock with its tail rotor and about 15 metres later hit a 3‑metre rock with the cabin before breaking apart.
  • Forensic work recovered wreckage spread over about 30 square metres and located the main rotor and engines roughly 67 metres ahead with signs of fire.
  • The JST says the helicopter’s certificates, maintenance records and weight at takeoff (4,603 kg) were within limits, but the pilot’s total flight experience is still under review.
  • Key evidence under technical analysis includes a severely damaged combined flight‑and‑voice recorder, two‑minute GPS position logs and simulator tests, and a final report with causes and safety recommendations is pending.
