J.R. Smith Placed Under Emergency Protective Order in Texas Assault Case

The order forbids contact with the unnamed alleged victim, bars firearm possession, imposes a roughly 1,000-foot exclusion zone, and remains in effect through Dec. 29.

Overview

  • A criminal complaint filed Oct. 2 accuses Smith of intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury to a woman connected to him by family or a dating relationship during an alleged Sept. 18 incident.
  • Police issued a warrant after the alleged Sept. 18 incident and arrested Smith following a license-plate reader hit that led to a traffic stop in Royse City on Sept. 28.
  • Smith was booked into the Hunt County Detention Center and posted a $5,000 bond before his release on Sept. 29.
  • A judge signed an emergency protective order on Sept. 29 that bars Smith from contacting the alleged victim, requires him to stay about 333 yards (roughly 1,000 feet) from her home and workplace, prohibits him from possessing firearms or ammunition, and runs through Dec. 29.
  • Smith’s lawyer has said he is presumed innocent and wants the matter resolved in court, and a Southlake police spokesperson says an arraignment in Tarrant County is expected later this month.
