JR Hachinohe Line Fully Restores Service 22 Days After Aomori Quake

Repairs to a damaged elevated bridge allowed JR East to restart trains across the full 65-kilometer route.

Overview

  • Operations resumed on December 30 across the entire line, including the Hachinohe–Same section that had remained closed after the December 8 earthquake.
  • Early inspections on December 9 identified significant damage between Hon-Hachinohe and Konakano, with concrete spalling and exposed steel on the Dai-2 Kashiwazaki elevated bridge.
  • JR East had reintroduced limited service on December 22 with temporary trains between Same in Hachinohe and Kuji in Iwate.
  • The first trains on the fully restored route departed after 9 a.m., and staff welcomed returning riders at Hon-Hachinohe Station.
  • JR East officials said repairs progressed to ensure safe operation and encouraged visitors to return to Hachinohe.
