The committee is gathering economic expertise to refine constitutional amendments for synchronizing Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.

Overview

  • On July 30, the Joint Parliamentary Committee met in New Delhi to hear from economist N.K. Singh and Dr. Prachi Mishra on the financial and policy dimensions of election synchronization.
  • The panel is scrutinizing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to enable simultaneous national and state elections.
  • Chairman P.P. Chaudhary emphasized that members are transcending party affiliations to draft legislation capable of withstanding judicial scrutiny and advancing Prime Minister Modi’s vision.
  • Field visits to five states and a union territory provided inputs from political leaders, civil society and officials, most of whom expressed support for the proposal.
  • Any final amendment will require a two-thirds majority in Parliament and ratification by at least half of India’s state legislatures to take effect.
