Joseph Savarino Charged With DWI in Durham Crash That Killed 15-Year-Old

Police say a breath test measured 0.11 percent blood alcohol for the 26-year-old.

Overview

  • Savarino’s Ford Explorer struck 15-year-old Jack O’Shea on Saturday just before 9 p.m. at Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham, and the boy died at the scene.
  • Records show Savarino admitted he had been drinking, and a breathalyzer around 12:45 a.m. Sunday registered a 0.11 blood-alcohol level, above North Carolina’s 0.08 legal limit.
  • He was booked into the Durham County Detention Center and released Monday after posting a $100,000 secured bond, and a judge ordered his driver’s license revoked for at least 30 days.
  • Durham police say the case remains an active investigation, and court records indicate a court date is set for May.
  • O’Shea’s mother identified him in a Facebook post and shared a remembrance of his day at church, baseball, and a bike ride, as national attention grew because Savarino is Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson.
