José María Castellano, Architect of Inditex’s IPO, Dies at 78

Amancio Ortega issued a rare public tribute that underscored Castellano’s central role in Inditex’s rise.

  • Media outlets reported his death on September 17 and published arrangements for a wake at Tanatorio Parcesa La Paz with a mass at 18:00 and a funeral on Friday, September 19 at 20:00 at the Church of Santiago in A Coruña.
  • Castellano served on Inditex’s board from 1985 and became vice president and CEO in 1997, leading the company’s 2001 stock market debut and international expansion.
  • He left Inditex in 2005 after reported disagreements with Ortega, later taking senior roles across telecoms, banking, renewables and fashion.
  • As president of ONO from 2008 to 2014 he overseen the period leading to its sale to Vodafone, and he chaired Novagalicia Banco until its 2014 sale under the FROB process.
  • Since 2020 he was non-executive chairman of Greenalia with roughly 6% of its shares, and his academic career included a doctorate, a professorship in finance and accounting, and recognition such as the Medalla de Galicia.
