José Abreu Joins Puerto Rican Winter League for Comeback Bid

The former AL MVP aims to rebuild his career after a difficult stint with the Houston Astros.

José Abreu, released by the Houston Astros in June, has signed with the Senadores de San Juan in Puerto Rico's professional baseball league.
Abreu struggled during his time with the Astros, posting a career-low .680 OPS in 2023 and a .361 OPS in 2024 before being released.
The Astros remain responsible for the remainder of Abreu's $58.5 million contract, but he aims to return to MLB in 2025.
Abreu, who turns 38 in January, has never played in the Caribbean Winter Leagues despite a successful professional career in Cuba and MLB.
