Joran van der Sloot Returns to Peru to Serve Sentence after Confessing to Natalee Holloway Murder and Extortion in USA Trial
Van der Sloot to finish serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for a previous murder conviction, after being sentenced in the U.S. to 20 years for attempts to extort money from Holloway's mother.
- Joran van der Sloot has confessed to the murder of Natalee Holloway in 2005 and has been extradited from the U.S. back to Peru to continue a previous 28-year sentence for another murder.
- The confession came alongside a guilty plea to charges of extortion, whereby he attempted to extort money from Holloway's mother in exchange for information about the location of Holloway's body.
- Despite the confession, U.S. authorities cannot prosecute Van der Sloot for Holloway's murder due to the statute of limitations for murder having expired in Aruba, where the crime took place.
- In the U.S, Van der Sloot was sentenced to 20 years for extortion and wire fraud. However, this sentence will run concurrently with his existing sentence in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores in 2010.
- The guilt plea involved van der Sloot disclosing the manner of Holloway's death and the location of her body, providing closure for Holloway's family almost two decades after her disappearance.
