Joël Matip Retires from Football at Age 33

The former Liverpool and Cameroon defender ends his career after a successful tenure marked by major titles and injuries.

Joël Matip, who played for Liverpool from 2016 to 2024, announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.
During his time at Liverpool, Matip won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, among other honors.
Matip's final game for Liverpool was against Fulham, where he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The center-back also earned 27 caps for the Cameroon national team, participating in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
Matip was briefly linked with moves to Bayer Leverkusen and a 2. Bundesliga club after leaving Liverpool, but he ultimately decided to retire.
