Johor Court Fines Singapore PR RM9,000 Over Concealed Plate in RON95 Video

The case underscores Malaysia’s enforcement of subsidised RON95 rules for locally registered vehicles.

Overview

  • Long Sa Kow, 63, pleaded guilty in the Kulai Magistrate’s Court to displaying a registration number that did not belong to his Singapore-registered car under Section 108(3)(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
  • Prosecutors said he concealed characters to show “LJ8967” instead of the actual “SLJ8967M” so he could purchase subsidised petrol.
  • Magistrate R Salini imposed a RM9,000 fine after submissions from Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Thiviya and the defence, and the accused paid the amount.
  • Police opened the case after a Jan 4 video showed a silver Volkswagen being filled with RON95 in Kulai with parts of its plate covered, and the man later presented himself with his wife to assist investigations.
  • The RON95 subsidy applies only to Malaysian citizens using Malaysia-registered vehicles under schemes such as BUDI95, while foreign-registered vehicles are limited to premium RON97.
