Johnson Dismisses Maxwell, Touts DOJ Compliance as House Weighs Epstein File Disclosures

Johnson points to tens of thousands of documents already turned over as he argues Oversight can release materials without a forced floor vote.

Overview

  • In a CNN interview, Speaker Mike Johnson said Ghislaine Maxwell has no credibility and that he discounts her recent statements.
  • Johnson asserted the Department of Justice and the administration have been fully compliant with subpoenas and have submitted more than 34,000 Epstein documents.
  • He said House Oversight is reviewing the materials to protect victims' identities and that public releases could follow after that process.
  • Pressed on a discharge petition by Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna, Johnson called it unnecessary, declined to guarantee a vote on it, and said there will probably be a vote on some related measure.
  • The exchange followed weeks of scrutiny over an early August recess and came after DOJ-released transcripts of Maxwell’s interviews with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, conducted under limited immunity.
