John Stones Convicted for Speeding After Missing Police Letter

Magistrates penalised the England defender after missed correspondence during World Cup duty pushed the case into court.

Overview

  • On May 8 Stones was recorded by a speed camera travelling at 43mph on a 30mph road near his Knutsford home.
  • He admitted being the driver when first contacted by Cheshire Police but did not respond to a second letter offering a fixed penalty.
  • Because the fixed-penalty option was not taken the matter proceeded under the Single Justice Procedure and in late September a magistrate convicted him and imposed four penalty points.
  • The court ordered Stones to pay a £666 fine plus £120 in costs and a £266 victim surcharge, and he told magistrates he missed the correspondence because he was with England at the World Cup, on holiday and then moved to Milan.
  • Separate reports say officers saw him using a hand-held phone while driving on a different occasion but that allegation was not part of the recent conviction and the new points could affect his licence and insurance costs.
